Photo courtesy of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Wagner solid for Apple Sox Former Sequim High School baseball standout Chad Wagner is 3-0 with a 1.32 earned-run average in six starts (as of July 20) for the Wenatchee Applesox, a wood-bat summer collegiate league. Wagner is holding opponents to a .228 batting average while striking out 26 batters. In 41 innings hes given up just five extra base hits and seven walks. On July 18, he held the Spokane RiverHawks to just one run on four hits in a 4-1 Applesox win. Wagner graduated from Sequim High School in 2006 and pitches for the University of Hawaii-Pacific Sea Warriors. SARC offers free circuit training The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center is offering a free circuit room orientation this summer at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Preregistration is required; maximum enrollment is six. Participants must be at least 16 years old and may register by calling SARC at 683-3344, x16. The first orientation is July 14 and they run through Aug. 27. Saundra Kent tennis tourney set The Peninsula Tennis Club hosts the 24th-annual Saundra Kent Memorial Tennis tournament, scheduled for two weekends this summer. The weekend of July 31-Aug. 2 features singles and super senior doubles( 62 years and older). The weekend of Aug. 7-9 features for mens, womens and mixed doubles. The first round matches begin at 5:30 p.m. on July 31 and Aug. 7. The tournament is at Erickson Park Courts at 4th and Race streets in Port Angeles. Cost is $20 per event for tennis club members, $25 per event for non-members. Funds raised go for college scholarships that are awarded to deserving local high school tennis players. Robin Hill fun run set A five-kilometer fun run/walk is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Robin Hill Park. The race requires no participation fee; no awards are given. Open trail event set The Wild Angels 4-H Horse Club of Jefferson County is hosting an open competitive trail trial at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25. The competition is held at property off Discovery Road between Highway 20 (Four Corners Road) and Discovery Golf Club in Port Townsend. There will be signs out to direct participants to a horse trailer parking area and trails. The trail trial consists of a variety of obstacles; riders are scored on how well they and their horse negotiate each obstacle. Early bird pricing is $20 per person for entry forms postmarked by July 17. Cost after July 17, including day of competition, is $25. Awards are presented shortly after the last rider finishes the course. Concessions will be available. SHS cross country hosts car washes Sequim High School cross country team members are hosting a pair of car washes this summer to raise funds for a competition in Seaside, Ore. The first car wash is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The second is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. Both car washes are at Chase Bank, formerly Washington Mutual Bank, 680 W. Parks offer free weekend A walk in the park is free for one August weekend for anyone visiting national parks across the country, including Olympic National Park. All 391 national parks offer free admission this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16. The entrance fee waiver does not affect fees for activities such as camping, reservations, tours, or concessions. Coaching clinic set for August Peninsula College is home to the Port Angeles Youth Soccer Club coaching clinic for E licenses this August. The camp is slated for 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 23 and 5-9 p.m. Aug. 24 and 25. The camp is at the college soccer fields, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Cost is $25 per participant This Washington State Youth Soccer Association course focuses on coaching points and the teaching of technique, with an introduction to the Principles of Play (attack and defense.) The E course also provides elementary information on the management and preparation of a team. Coaches will be asked to play. Participants need to bring pencil, paper, water, cleats, shin guards and a ball. Applications and money must be received by Aug. 18; the camp has just 32 spots. Junkyard volleyball camp set for July The Sequim Junkyard Dawgs Volleyball camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on July 28-31 at the Sequim High School gymnasium, 601 N. Sequim Ave. The camp is open to Sequim players entering grades 9-12 this fall; a few spaces remain and are to be filled on a first-come, first-paid basis. Players from other schools may register after July 10. Middle-school players may register and participate if camp organizers receive at least nine registrants of those grade levels (6-8). Cost is $205. Bill Neville, former coach for the University of Washington Husky volleyball team and 1984 gold medal-winning U.S. mens Olympic team, runs the camp. He is the National Commissioner of Coaching Education for USA Volleyball. Rowing group gives on-water lessons The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association and the Clallam County Family YMCA offer on-water rowing lessons from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from the associations boathouse at 1431 Ediz Hook. The program is on-the-water rowing for those ages 16 and older, using eight-seat shells with sweep rowing. Anyone wishing to participate with the rowing club must take a five-week session, set for Aug. 22-Sept. 19. Preregistration is required. Cost is $60 for YMCA members or $120 for nonmembers. Participants also need a certified Red Cross float test before being allowed to get into boats. Experienced rowers and coxswains are asked to help set the boats to enable novices to get their oar blades in and out of the water cleanly. For more information, see www.ccfymca.org. Sequim Wolves host summer football camp The Sequim High School athletic department hosts a youth football camp, open to students entering grades 1-8. The camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon, Aug. 3-6, meeting at the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road. Required equipment includes outdoor shoes and clothing for play outside. Cost is $45 per athlete; the fee includes a camp T-shirt and a football. The camp features instruction by a staff from Sequim High School. NFL Flag opens registration for fall league The Sequim NFL Flag fall league is open to boys and girls of ages 6-12. Girls teen soccer camp set for August A soccer camp for girls ages 13-19 is scheduled for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Aug. 9 at the Peninsula College soccer fields, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. The camp focuses on conditioning, technical development and tactical decision-making skills. Participants are urged to bring cleats, shin guards, paper, pencil and lunch. Some time is spent in a classroom and the camp features a one-hour lunch break each day. Cost is $85 per player.
