Farm To Table: Now they’re cooking … with lavender

After owning and operating a full-service bakery for seven years and continuing to bake wedding cakes and specialty cakes for several years after that, Patti and Jake Bostwick had experience baking with just about everything … except lavender.

Needless to say, when they moved to Sequim and got the itch to start baking again, they began to experiment with the unique flavor of lavender. In short time they have mastered the art of baking with lavender, capturing aroma and flavor in a subtle and tastefully delivered rendition of lemon-lavender pound cake and lemon-lavender cupcakes.

Their new bakery, Blue Mountain Baking Company, offers an ever-changing assortment of cupcakes, cookies, dessert bars, and hand pies.

“It is a fun way to express our artistic side,” Jake says.

When you visit their booth at the Sequim Farmers Market, you will understand what he means. Each individual bakery item is truly a work of culinary and visual appeal. The couple’s attention to detail is evident down to their selection and placement of the toppings on every delightful treat.

Often times their inspiration comes from what is in season and available locally. Making these connections has been meaningful, as the Bostwicks place plenty of value on participating in their community and finding ways that people can help each other out.

In May they were excited to bake with locally grown rhubarb, and in June they partnered with Graysmarsh Farm to make strawberry shortcake.

Just wait to see what new specialties they feature with as more berries start to ripen!

Visiting the Blue Mountain Baking Company is yet another way you can bring the bounty of our local farms to your table. This local bakery can only be found at the Sequim Farmers Market.

Raspberry season is upon us, and on Saturdays at the Sequim Farmers Market you can find raspberries at Emily’s Flowers, Graysmarsh, and River Run. Sea Basket Farm extends the harvest with their late-season raspberries.
