All skis on deck for Winterfest

"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow."

That's the theme for the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Education Foundation's Winterfest 2009, set for Nov. 20-21 at the Vern Burton Center in Port Angeles.

With snow on the mountaintops, skiers and snowboarders are getting itchy for some runs down the hill at Hurricane Ridge and the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club wants to invite you to celebrate 50 years of winter sports on the ridge.

Winterfest begins at

5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and winds up with the annual ski swap Saturday morning and afternoon.

All funds raised in the two-day event will benefit the Winter Sports Club that operates the two rope tows and the Poma lift on the ridge.

Funds really are needed this year as the most popular lift, the Poma, could not operate last year because of lack of snow and the club counts on the $25 all-lift fee when that tow is running to fund the entire operation.

The program is for dinner and Warren Miller's newest movie "Dynasty" on Friday night. There will be entertainment by the Port Angeles High School Jazz Band and they always show up in crazy ski gear.

The oyster bar will feature oysters fresh off the barbecue, along with a variety of munchies. That will be followed by a big prime rib dinner. The no-host happy hour goes on all night and there will be silent and live auction events.

Cost is $40 before the event and tickets are on sale now at Swain's General Store, Port Book and News, Brown's Outdoor and Necessities and Temptations. It will be $45 at the door.

Swap away

On Saturday, the Hurricane Ridge Ski Team and Kitsap Sports will present the annual ski swap. Bring items to sell between 8:30-11 a.m. Return at noon to shop for more gear and browse until 3:30 p.m.

Return to pick up your check or unsold gear, then stick around for the Warren Miller movie.

Cost for the ski swap is $3 and the whole family is in for $7. The movie at 7 p.m. is $10 per person.

Swap tips

If you are planning to sell some of your ski stuff at the ski swap in Port Angeles, you need to make sure all of your equipment is clean, tidy and polished for sale.

_ Clothing - If you are selling parkas, winter coats, vests, ski bibs or pants or gloves that don't fit any more, they must look slightly used instead of really used.

Make sure you wash or clean all jackets, coats and vests. If bibs or pants have any kind of tear or rip, sew 'em up. The cleaner the item, the better it will attract a buyer. Try to include the size of the garment if the size has worn off due to use.

Ski hats and gloves should be clean as well and a size will help sell.

_ Boots - Ski boots are a hot item at the ski swap. Make sure you get the boots out now and give them a good look-see. If there is any kind of odor, they won't sell. Clean, clean and spray with disinfectant.

The heavy plastic outer shell on boots will shine up nicely. Use a cleaner wax and buff them up so they look attractive. If you can attach a size on the boots, they, too, will sell a lot better.

__Skis - The slats will sell if they look good. Try to get all the scuff marks off the skis. If the bindings still are attached and you are selling the package, make sure the bindings are clean and oiled so they look good and operate well when a boot is put into the right slot.

Try to use a WD-40 product and wipe away all the excess spray.

Members of the Winter Sports Club will be there to advise on skis and other equipment as to what the asking price might be. One word of caution. If you are trying to sell older skis and bindings, the bindings might not be saleable as they are too old.

_ Poles - If you are selling poles, make sure they are clean and marks are gone. If the pole is bent a bit, not much of a matter, but if they are really bent, forget it.

_ Boards - There will be many selling snowboards and moving up to another level. Make sure the boards are clean and ready to go on the hill. Make sure the bindings are in good working order.

If you need more information, call the message line at 457-2879 and learn more about the ski area at www.hurricaneridge.com.

Wednesday whirl

_ Wolves - How about those

Sequim Wolves! A 9-1 season, champs of the Olympic/Nisqually League and in the round of 16 state football playoffs..

The first test is Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Viking Stadium in Poulsbo against Burlington-Edison and for a change, the Wolves won't have to travel very far. With such a varied and quick-striking offense and a smothering defense, expect the Wolves to win this first test.

By the way, Viking Stadium is all spiffed up with field turf, so no mud or yuck from now on in the playoffs.

_ State stuff - Sequim's Allison Cutting could not duplicate last year's effort, but the gutsy runner placed 27th in the 2A girls race at Pasco. She has been suffering from illness the past two weeks. The Roberts girls of Kingston, Ruby and Marina, were 1-2 and the Buccaneers finished second as a team.

Rachel Hardy of the Wolves will swim at state this weekend at Federal Way after placing high enough at district in the 50 and 100 freestyles and I know plenty of Sequim splash fans will be there.

_ Dawg gone it - The University of Washington Huskies squandered away a win at UCLA last Saturday by not finishing up drives in the so-called "red zone." It was a tough loss to take but don't count out this young Husky team as they might go Beaver hunting this weekend in Corvallis.

_ Coug'n it - It is not easy to keep up with WSU's long list of losing streaks following a 48-7 blowout at Arizona. The Cougs are 1-18 against top 25 teams since 2004 and WSU has been outscored 145-3 in opening quarters this season and going back to the final games of last year; they are on the short end of the score in the first quarter 159-3.

_ Hawk talk - How many of you - come on now, admit it - tuned out the Seattle Seahawk game last Sunday when it was 17-0 after one quarter?

Yep, they came back to outscore the woeful Detroit Lions 32-3 in the last three periods to get a much-needed win.
