It is spring cleaning time, sports fans, as I clear off the old desk and send along some stuff that probably should've been sent two weeks ago.
Here we go, in no particular order:
Ski help
All skiers and snowboarders are invited to toast the end of another ski season on Hurricane Ridge by attending a special fundraising event tomorrow, Thursday, in Port Angeles. (See, I told you it should've gone out earlier ... )
It was a fun but very short season on Hurricane Ridge and the road closure for a month did, indeed, put the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club in the deep red ink.
Thursday's event at Wine on the Waterfront in downtown P.A. will be from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $25, available at the door. Enjoy music by B.B. and R., yummy appetizers from Oven Spoonful and enjoy your first glass of wine in a keepsake Hurricane Ridge wine glass.
It's a pretty painless way to help the club out of the red ink.
Prep stuff
The WIAA executive board denied a request to add one more day to the Mat Classic high school wrestling tournament in the Tacoma Dome. The state's premier event will continue as a two-day affair.
The proposal was spearheaded by the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association and could've eliminated regionals if they made Mat Classic a three-day affair.
The change would've increased the number of wrestlers at state and 65 percent of the coaches were in favor.
The WIAA reported the proposal did not get approval by a majority of the athletic directors in the state. They reportedly opposed it by a two-to-one margin.
Seahawks
Seattle will open the NFL season at home Sept. 12 against the San Francisco 49ers after preseason games at home with Tennessee and Green Bay and road games at Minnesota and Oakland.
No Sunday or Monday night football or Thursday, for that matter, for Seattle this year, but they only have three 10 a.m. starts and the season ends with four of the final six games at Qwest Field.
The combined 2009 record of the new list of foes was 116-140, the third easiest record among the league's 32 teams. Only NFC West rivals St. Louis and Arizona have easier schedules. Also, the Hawks are aligned in the AFC West that only had one team with a winning record a year ago. Oakland was 5-11 and Kansas City was 4-12.
For the record, Seattle will travel 23,122 miles for its road games, third most in the league behind the 49ers and Broncos.
Seattle drafted a big tackle and a strong safety in the first two rounds. Let's hope they can help right away.
Hoopla
The NCAA basketball tournament will add three teams and use a huge television deal that amounts to $10.8 billion next year.
CBS and Turner Broadcasting will combine to show all games live on four networks. That's a lot of basketball, fans, but I'm glad they did not expand to 96 teams.
Coaching news
The Kitsap Sun reported Penny Geinger of Kingston will return to coach the girls basketball team. She took over when then head coach Kevin Strozier resigned the week before the season started.
She said it was fun and she likes the team coming back that includes outstanding guards Sophia Baetz, Amanda Carper, Lindsey Wicklein and post Elsa Brown.
Bremerton coach Al Valencia has resigned after one season and NK coach Bill Hobaugh is stepping down after three seasons.
