Become a Waldorf student for a morning
“I wish I could have come to a school like this,” is the sentiment expressed by many adults when they visit Sunfield Waldorf School and witness the students as they joyfully engage in their learning activities.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., interested adults are invited to become a student for a morning and experience firsthand the unique qualities of Waldorf education.
The morning will open with an introduction to Waldorf education and to Sunfield, Land for Learning, located on 81 acres of protected forest, wetlands and fields. Teachers will describe how the Waldorf school activities are integrally connected to a working biodynamic farm, where all the students have opportunities to explore the natural environment. Grade school students help with farm chores daily and use the diverse campus for experiential studies that enhance their academic curriculum, particularly in the sciences.
Following the introduction will be a sampling of the activities of the pre-K and kindergarten classes. Participants will then move through the grades classrooms, where teachers will offer a math lesson using rhythmic bean bag activities from the early grades and a language arts and knot-tying lessons typical of grade 4/5 work. Samples of the Waldorf middle school curriculum include a lesson in physical science and a three-dimensional geometry lesson, working with the Platonic solids. There also will be an overview of the history curriculum through the grades, designed to reflect the development of the child. There will be opportunities to ask questions and view students’ work.
Sunfield Waldorf School currently has more than 100 students enrolled in Pre-K through ninth grade. It is an affiliate of the American Waldorf School Association of North America. Waldorf Education is currently the fastest growing independent education system in the world, with more than 1,000 schools in 83 countries.
