Veterans Corner: Summertime activities for veterans

We have had Flag Day and the Fourth of July. I hope you all have displayed the United States flag on these occasions. Hopefully, you made sure it was clean and in good condition.

If you had to replace your flag, bring the old one to the American Legion Post on South Sequim Avenue and Prairie Street. There is a box on the west side of the building that you can put the flag in. We will make sure it is disposed of properly.

DAR invite

The Michael Trebert Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invites ladies interested in learning more about DAR to attend the summer picnic at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Sunny Shores on Serpentine Avenue off Woodcock Road.

Bring picnic food to share. The chapter will provide drinks and plates, napkins, forks, etc. If you have questions, e-mail Joyce at n7jpw@juno.com.

This is a great opportunity to meet the members in a casual setting and learn more about the DAR and its programs.

Stand Down in P.T.

Voices For Veterans will hold a homeless veterans Stand Down in Port Townsend from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Monday, July 28, at the Elks Club just outside town. There will be a hot breakfast and lunch, service providers to talk to, the clothing room, haircuts, medical and dental, etc. Any veteran in the area is welcome to come and talk to the service providers and meet other veterans.

The organization still is looking for a storage area of about 550 square feet to store supplies in all year. If you have such a space to donate, contact me at 683-6419.

Honoring vets

The Sequim Home Depot will be holding a Veterans Appreciation Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.  Saturday Aug. 9. The Veterans Service Organizations will be on hand to answer questions about their organizations (MOAA, American Legion, VFW, Marine Corps League, etc.). There will be a raffle for $1 per ticket or six for $5. Prizes will be Home Depot merchandise. Money from the raffle will go to a local veterans project.

Taking aim

The American Legion is hosting a Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Aug. 23. Registration opens at 10 a.m. at the Peninsula Long Rifles Shooting Range on Slab Camp Road west of Sequim.

This competition costs $10 a person using 22 caliber open sight rifles. The first-place prize is a $75 gift card, second is a $50 card and third is a $25 card.

All veterans are invited to come out and shoot. You can use range weapons if you don’t have your own. Ammunition is provided.

For more information, call Commander Carl Bradshaw at 360-775-1477.
