Today the Sequim Gazette embarks on a continuing series of reports that look longer and dig deeper into their subjects than our usual news and feature stories.
We're calling the series Insight and it's the brainchild of the Gazette's news staff, who wanted opportunities to cover more thoroughly the stories that deserve such attention. Subjects will range from crime to creativity. All will involve Sequim and eastern Clallam County.
The first report focuses on Dauna Cole, a Sequim woman who has survived horrific child sexual abuse, the splitting of her personality into more than 100 distinct identities and a long road through therapy to integrate her shattered mind.
That's the title of her book: "Shattered Mind."
This project started with a request for a single feature story but quickly widened into an examination of child sexual abuse, its perpetrators and victims - who are multiplied exponentially through the child's family members and friends.
It's a report some readers will be loath to read because, indeed, it addresses horrid things.
It has a happy ending, however, but more importantly calls for awareness and action to counter crimes that often are shrouded in their victims' shame.
