Sequim Open Air Market

If you haven't come to see Sequimarimba, Ooooh la la, I highly recommend you come to the market for this special event. The North Olympic Peninsula's seven-member Sequimarimba band plays marimba-centric music of the Shona people of Africa.

The band operates as a nonprofit venture, donating the majority of its earnings to local environmental and social causes. They will have you grinning ear to ear with their upbeat rhythms. This band is having a good time!

New at the market this year is Jason Meloche, the latest addition to Lazy J Farm. Many of you are used to seeing Lela Copeland, who is the founder of the produce operation at Lazy J Farm. Having expanded vegetable production exponentially, Lela's operation now attends three Saturday markets. It also has become a business run by three young farmers, Lela, Jason and Mike Gwaltney. With three acres and a lot of ambitious love for the land, these folks are bringing some incredibly high quality organic produce to our market. They also are using compostable vegetable-based bags. This is really special.

This week they are featuring their new potatoes, garlic and famous spinach that everyone has been missing and patiently waiting for.

Greyhounds Pets, Inc., will be parading the market with lovely greyhound dogs. If you are interested in learning about greyhounds, adoption or care, come down and speak with the experts. They will be happy to speak with you. They will be joined in the community booth tents with the Sequim Rotary Club.

Time for zucchini pancakes. Just mix up the following ingredients, locally grown whenever possible, and pour the batter onto a hot greasy skillet. With a ladle, flip when golden brown. Top with José's Salsa and sour cream! Great for any and every meal of the day.

2 medium zucchini (about 3/4 pound), grated

2 tablespoons grated onion

2 or 3 fresh eggs, lightly beaten

6 to 8 tablespoons flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

See you at the market!
