Veterinarians vie for chance to ‘Kiss the Pig’
Once again a lucky local veterinarian will have the unique opportunity to kiss a pig at the Clallam County Fair, courtesy of the 4-H Leaders’ Council and its 13th annual 4-H Kiss the Pig fundraiser.
Piggy banks are in the offices of all participating veterinarians to accept donations in their names.
Kiss the Pig display boards taking donations for all the veterinarians are at the Clallam Co-op Farm & Garden, 216 E. Washington St., and Sunny Farms, 261461 U.S. Highway 101 in Sequim; and at Airport Garden Center, 2200 W. Edgewood Drive, and Leitz Farms, 1527 E. Front St., Suite B, in Port Angeles.
Donations also are being accepted by mail. Checks to Clallam County 4-H Leaders’ Council — with name of the vet noted — may be sent to G.P. Taylor, 2103 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles, WA 98363-1623.
The “winner” — the vet with the most money donated in his or her name — gets to kiss the pig in the swine/sheep arena at the Clallam County Fair at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Last year’s “winner” and 2013 contest spokesman, Dr. Melissa Smith, will be cheering on the new winner and giving advice in the challenging event.
Money raised in the contest provides scholarships to graduating seniors. More than 500 county youths are active in 4-H programs; each 4-H graduating senior — seven this year — who applies for a scholarship and completes the year receives a scholarship.
Sequim-area veterinarians participating include Dr. Heather Short, Dr. Mary Danley and Dr. Vickie Howell, Sequim Animal Hospital, 202 N. Seventh Ave.; Dr. Rawnie Torres, Country Care Veterinarian and Acupuncture Service, 51 Valley Center Place; Dr. Erik Splawn, Happy Valley Veterinary Services; Dr. Linda Allen and Dr. Rachael Snyder, Pacific Northwest Veterinary Hospital, 289 W. Bell St.; and Dr. Toni Jensen, Hurricane Ridge Veterinary Hospital, 530 West Fir St., Suite D.
Previous winners, since 2001, are Dr. Bob Mowbray, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Cheryl Adaska, Dr. Dennis Wilcox, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Marna Hall, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Brian Marts, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Meg Gordon, Dr. Sandra Smith and Dr. Melissa Smith.
