The Port Angeles Symphony’s Chamber orchestra’s latest performance, “Siegfried, a Serenade, and a Surprise,” comes to Sequim and Port Angeles on Friday-Saturday, May 13-14.

 

Musicians include Adam Stern, symphony director, who plays piano with violinist Kate Southard-Dean, Lilias Green on viola and Fred Thompson on cello.

 

They’ll play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Piano Quartet No. 2” in E-flat, K. 493; “Siegfried Idyll” by Richard Wagner; Dag Wiren’s “Serenade for Strings” and a special surprise from the Golden Age of Television.

Musicians

The Port Angeles Symphony and Seattle Philharmonic music director Stern has led several symphonies and performances. He was associate conductor of the Seattle Symphony from 1996-2001 and conducted concerts in all of the orchestra’s major series, including collaborations with James Taylor, Judy Collins and Art Garfunkel.

 

Stern was featured as a soloist and chamber musician with the Seattle Symphony and the Northwest Chamber Orchestra. In 1990, Stern won a Grammy Award as “Classical Producer of the Year,” for his work on an extensive series of recordings made with Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony.

 

Southard-Dean won an audition to attend the Congress of Strings at the University of Washington. For the past 21 years, Southard-Dean has participated as concertmaster and assistant concertmaster of the Port Angeles Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and performed with various chamber ensembles on the peninsula.

 

Thompson studied at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and then at the University of Utah in English and music. He’s a retired English and humanities professor at Peninsula College, who during his tenure studied in Italy and led five study-abroad tours. Besides being a long-time player in the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra, in which he is principal cello, Thompson is an active recitalist and chamber musician.

 

Green is principal violist with the Port Angeles Symphony and teaches violin and viola in Sequim and Port Angeles. She was a member of various symphonies in the U.S. and Europe, and an active chamber music performer. She created sound tracks in Italy and wrote for state broadcasting and cinema.
