Today, Aug. 3, the North Olympic Library System sponsors two appearances by Oregon Shadow Theatre's production of "Puss in Boots." The first is at 10:30 a.m. in the Sequim High School auditorium. 601 N. Sequim Ave., and the second at 3 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The Oregon Shadow Theatre is a Portland-based company whose award-winning plays have toured the United States and Canada, including performances at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Northwest Puppet Center in Seattle and the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Ga.

The ethnic diversity and rich musical traditions of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayous are the background for the theater's adaptation of the classic French fairy tale, "Puss in Boots." Antoine, the miller's son, inherits Puss, the remarkable talking cat. The two set out on a journey to impress the great King Calypso and the princess, Sweet Emma. Colorful shadow puppets inspired by Mardi Gras' outrageous parade costumes along with live Zydeco and Cajun music give spicy flavor to this production.

The Oregon Shadow Theatre's appearances are presented as part of One World, Many Stories, the NOLS annual summer reading program for young people, which runs through Saturday, Aug. 6. Participants will be eligible for prizes, including a grand prize.

In Port Angeles, safety considerations limit attendance for these performances. Arrive early to ensure a seat. Passes will be handed out in the library prior to the performance on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 417-8502, visit www.nols.org or e-mail kids@nols.org.
