An original play, “B'aktun 13,” takes three characters to the mythological world of the Mayan calendar and the end of the world at Peninsula College's first Studium Generale on Sept. 27. Submitted photo

The Studium Generale returns to Peninsula College this fall with 11 free diverse programs.

The 2012 fall quarter series opens at 12:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, with an original production, “B'aktun 13” by Teatro Milagro (Miracle Theater) from Portland, Ore.

It tells the story of three individuals who are swept up in an immigration raid and deported to Mexico and are suddenly immersed into indigenous prophecies surrounding B’aktun 13, the final era in the Mayan calendar. In the Yucatán, they encounter Mayan deities who lead them deeper into a mythological universe.

Programs are held each Thursday from 12:35 p.m.-1:25 p.m. in the college's Little Theater (J-16) on the main campus in Port Angeles. Seats are first-come, first-seated.

Along with “B'aktun 13,” other presenters include American Conversations speaker Rory Kennedy, The Story People of Clallam County and Fulbright visiting professor Dr. Sandep Kandhwal.

No event takes place on Thanksgiving: Oregon Shakespeare Festival actors present excerpts from several plays at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, and “Julius Caesar” at 12:35 p.m.

The Studium Generale finishes on Dec. 6, with English professor Alice Derry reading from her collection of poetry.
