Many thanks to all who attended the Memorial Day services. We had 118 people at Blue Mountain and a lovely rendition of "Taps" on the saxophone. Thanks also to the Evanses, Langstons, Humphreys, Ann, Sandy, Pat and Tom, and Kelly for their help putting out the flags on Sunday. Hopefully the children now understand more about why we honor veterans. The NJROTC cadets were there all weekend to help the families and show respect for the service of the veterans who have passed on.

The Port Angeles High School NJROTC hosts its awards ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, in the main gymnasium. I have the honor of presenting the CDR Lorri Gilchrist Medal for Community Service, the Military Officer Association medals for leadership and the DAR medal. Please come and show your support for the program and the cadets' achievements.

The American Legion and the MOAA have signed up to sponsor a month of hot dogs for the SeaTac USO. This costs $60. Jerry takes the 40 pounds of hot dogs and the buns over. If you would like to sponsor a month, e-mail him at eletteor@msn.com.

The Rebellion Dogs Quilt Guild is looking for donations to keep their program of gratitude quilts for local in-need veterans progressing. They need irons, ironing boards, fabric, backing, low loft batting, embroidery floss, pearl cotton and people who are willing to help - all skill levels are welcome. For more information, call JoAnn Vikery at 461-0506.

A proclamation for "Korean War Remembrance Week" will be read at local city council meetings the week of June 21 and at the county commissioners' meeting on June 25. Please attend one of these meetings and show your support for the Korean War veterans.

June 14 is Flag Day. The American Legion will be holding a flag retirement ceremony at the post on Prairie Street at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend. This would be a great time to bring unserviceable flags for proper disposal. Please do not fly tattered, faded or defaced flags.

There are many events in June that commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. The Korean Consulate General of Seattle, Yeoghan Choi, announced that the Korean War Veterans League will hold an observance on June 26 in Olympia. There also are services in Wilsonville, Ore. The South Korean government is sending a cruiser to Vancouver, British Columbia, in July. If you are interested in attending any of these events, e-mail Jerry Rettela at eletteor@msn.com.

Since July 4 will be before my next column, I would like to invite you all to come to the parade in Port Angeles. The DAR, Marine Corps League, Korean War Veterans and other service groups will be marching. A great prelude to the fireworks! I will be in my Betsy Ross outfit carrying the DAR flag, so please wave to me!
