In early November, the Port Angeles Navy Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps’ Roughrider Company conducted its annual basic leadership training (mini boot camp). This was the largest ever held, with 93 cadets attending three days of around-the-clock physical and mental training.

Classes included military uniform, CPR and first aid. The cadets participated in military drill, color guard, physical fitness and military discipline. The cadets learned the value of teamwork and the challenges of leadership in a stressful environment.

Lt. Col. Dale Koelling of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of Military Officers Association of America presented each cadet with a graduation certificate. The chapter provided funds for the food during the training.

Toys For Tots got off to a cold and snowy start at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, in front of the Sequim Walmart. The Marine Corps League and American Legion will be there collecting new toys or cash donations from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays until Dec. 18. Please stop by and donate a toy to help the children of Clallam County have a nice Christmas.

The Marine Corps League, Mount Olympus Detachment, will install Mark Schildnecht as commandant for the upcoming year at the Christmas celebration on Dec. 16 at the Naval Elks Lodge in Port Angeles. Attendees are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy. For more information, e-mail Terry at mroth@olypen.com.

The county commissioners terminated Scott Buck’s position as county veterans liaison as of Dec. 1.
Many thanks to Scott for all his hard work helping veterans and administering the fund. Tammy Sullenger, administrative assistant/veterans coordinator, will be handling the fund. She will be available 2:30-4:30 p.m. daily in the basement of the courthouse. She can be reached at 417-2383.

There also is a service office in Sequim. Service officers for the VFW, American Legion and any vet or spouse of a veteran can get help at the American Legion Post on Prairie Street and South Sequim Avenue. Please call 683-5915 and leave a message. A service officer will call you back and set up an appointment for you. An essential document to have is the DD-214 of the service member needing assistance.

I want to thank you for reading my column (four years almost) and wish all of you a merry Christmas and a happy new year! Please remember others less fortunate — the homeless vets, our local Coast Guard and our men and women overseas.
