American Legion Turkey Shoot coming up

Published on Wed, Aug 8, 2012

The Sequim American Legion has a new flag drop box on the west side of the building at South Sequim Avenue and East Prairie Street. This box is for unserviceable flags.

The flags will be given a proper disposal with honor and respect — many thanks to Ted Bedford who has done this for years.

Please check your flag and make sure it does not have rips or tears and is not faded. If so, it is time to get a new one!

Thank you for showing the proper respect for the symbol of the United States.

Turkey time

The American Legion All Veterans Turkey Shoot takes place on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Peninsula Long Rifles Shooting Range on Slab Camp Road, starting with registration at 10 a.m.

Cost is $15 to shoot .22-caliber open-sight rifles.

The rifles, ammo and targets will be provided. There will be three prizes.

Contact Carl Bradshaw for more information at 683-5915.

Thanks to Elks
Operation Holiday Stocking wants to thank the Ladies of the Elks and all those who came and had breakfast at Applebee’s to support their efforts. The group will be at the Sequim Open Aire Market on Saturday, Sept. 22.

They will have the stockings on a tree and for a minimum $1 donation the donor can write a personal note to put into one of the stockings.

They are committed to sending 1,200 stockings this Christmas. All the requests are coming from the troops themselves saying they need support and help with morale.

Look out for medicine scam

The Department of Veterans Affairs is warning veterans about a scam. The scammers will call veterans and say the process of dispensing their prescription medicines has changed and then ask for credit card information so they can send the medicines from the new source.

Dr. Gerald Cross, VA’s Under Secretary for Health, says, “VA simply does not call veterans and ask them to disclose personal financial information over the phone.”

Never give out any financial information over the phone to anyone who calls you.

If you have any questions about the VA or a phone call you have received, call a Veterans Service Officer.
The Sequim American Legion has a VSO at 683-5915.

Stand Down in PT
Voices For Veterans held a Veterans Stand Down on July 30 in Port Townsend. There were 130 veterans and their family members who received hot meals, haircuts, information from service providers and medical attention.

The next Stand Down will be Oct. 4 in Port Angeles at the fairgrounds. I am collecting money, new camping equipment and hygiene items and gently used warm clothing.

Call me at 683-6419 for pick-up.

Show ‘Unity’
Fort Discovery’s “Unity of Effort” celebration of the hard work and dedication of the men and women who protect our communities and nation will be held from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

Krista Chrisman will open with the singing of the national anthem at 1 p.m., followed by the U.S. Army’s 56th Army Band, which will play patriotic music from 1:05-2:30 p.m.

Honorary guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Carlin, USMC Security Forces Bangor.

Other guests include the Washington State Patrol, Airlift NW, a U.S. Customs helicopter, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit, Jefferson County Fire Districts 3 & 5, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, a Port Angeles Police K-9 Unit, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, a King County Sheriff’s helicopter and Clallam County Fire District 3.
