Maybe now

Maybe now (that Judy Cates died March 1 on U.S. Highway 101 at Discovery Bay RV Resort), the state will give us the signs to not pass on the shoulder and to slow down, etc., that they promised more than a year ago in a public meeting with Rep. Kevin Van De Wege in attendance when we successfully defeated construction of a passing lane at this site as it would have been too dangerous exactly for this reason.

Inappropriate activity

We were dismayed to see the photo on your Web site recently showing a family bingo game at the 7 Cedars Casino. Parents and their children were intently gambling at long tables We thought children were not allowed into casinos except to dine. When did this change?

In light of a recent Time magazine article, which states that teen gambling is at an all-time high, it would seem inappropriate to encourage children to come to the casino to gamble, even at the low stakes that bingo affords.

There is a big difference between playing bingo at home and playing it at a casino.

A matter of priorities

I am aware of issues pertaining to the golf park in SunLand and would like to make a point.

I cannot believe that people would put the game of golf above the lives of a number of residents in SunLand. If the fees are increased, it may force some into foreclosure, it will limit many on fixed incomes to reduce food and medicines.

Again, I cannot believe the selfishness of these golfers that would put the game of golf above peoples' lives, but then look at our big businesses and bankers; they do the same!

Leash your dogs

Dog owners: Please keep your animals on your property or on a leash. Not controlling your animal is un-neighborly, dangerous to others and your pet, and it's illegal. And if your dog hurts someone, you can lose everything you own. The judges have no tolerance for negligent dog owners.

It is springtime. More people are outside. Many are trying to enjoy the fresh air and improve their health through jogging and walking on trails and public roads.

Some of those people are dog owners themselves. When they have their dogs on leashes, they are at an even greater risk to an unleashed aggressive animal. If you think your dog isn't aggressive, it doesn't matter. If a dog feels territorial, it will become aggressive.

Sequim is a town that loves its dogs. So if you are one of those owners, please show your animal and your neighbors the respect they deserve.

Pogo paraphrased

I am a voting, registered (embarrassed) member of the Republican Party who could not, in all good conscience, vote for the McCain/Palin ticket in 2008 because I lived in Soldotna, Alaska, at the time. For a few years, I had witnessed Sarah Palin's ego, lack of ethics and lack of worldly education as she rose to governor, and then her inability to deal with state issues (and 20 alleged ethics violations) during 21/2 years in office, before she quit to take advantage of political speech and book money.

Now I see Palin, and essentially every Republican member of Congress, doing only what they do so well - criticize. It's easy to be a critic.

Can any reader cite one original, overt Republican idea on providing better, more affordable health care for most U.S. citizens? The insurance and pharmaceutical companies are raping the Medicare system and, as a result, most primary care doctors who simply cannot afford to take on new Medicare patients.

And the Republicans seem so determined to see Obama (and any Democrat?) fail, they cannot see how divided and unproductive the Congress has become. There was a time when good ideas came from both sides of the aisle and political compromise benefited our nation. No longer.

To paraphrase Pogo: "We has met the enemy and they is nothin' but a bunch of do-nothing critics."
