Book talk examines Chabon’s ‘Moonglow’

The Second Saturday Book Discussion Group talks about Michael Chabon’s “Moonglow” at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. To participate, simply read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed, and drop-ins are welcome.

Copies of “Moonglow” are available in various formats including regular print, large print, audiobook on CD and downloadable eBook, which may be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org. A limited number of copies of each book discussion selection are available at the library the month prior to each meeting. Fourth Friday to feature Anderson, Bonnie Dickmann

Sponsored by Writers on the Spit, the next Fourth Friday Readings session is set for 6:15 p.m. on Aug. 24 in the media room at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way. Featured Writers are Gordon Anderson and Bonnie Dickmann, followed by 5-minute open mic readings. Participants are urged to bring poems, short-short stories or memoir/novel snippets. They are asked to rehearse in advance, as readings are timed.

Call for artists for 5-by-7 show

Olympic Peninsula Art Association seeks artists to create and donate art pieces for the group’s upcoming fundraiser show. The show runs Nov. 2-4 at the Sequim Civic Center Chambers, 152 W. Cedar St, Sequim. Each artwork must be 5”-by-7”, signed only on the back and will be exhibited anonymously.

To donate artwork, bring in your donations to the OPAA General Members Meeting, 9:30 a.m.-noon, Sept. 27 and/or Oct. 25, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Or, mail the artwork to: OPAA 5×7 Show, PO Box 3722, Sequim WA 98382.

There is no fee to enter. All entries are for sale to the public for $20 each.

Artwork donations must be received no later than Oct. 25.

JFFA, Lefties host special concert

The Port Angeles Lefties and the Juan de Fuca Foundation joined together to throw an end-of-the-season Lefties outdoor celebration at Port Angeles’ Civic Field featuring a pair of popular bands on Saturday, Aug. 11.

San Francisco favorite The Sam Chase Band plays at 4 p.m. while the internationally-acclaimed circus band MarchFourth hits the stage at 6:30 p.m.

Food and beverages will be available with the same menu available at Lefties games. Seating is available in the stands or (with blankets and lawn chairs) on the field.

General Admission is $20 in advance, $25 door ($10 for age 12 and younger). Get tickets at jffa.org (online) Port Book and News in Port Angeles or at the gate the day of the show.

PC jazz ensemble sets show

The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble invites the public to its ninth-annual “Jazz on the Lawn” concert from noon-1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, on the terraced lawn just east of the Keegan Hall on the college campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The free concert, marking the 103rd performance by the band since its founding in September 2008, is a non-smoking, alcohol-free, informal environment in featuring Robbin Eaves on vocals with an eight-piece jazz band. Special guest on trumpet and flugelhorn is Ed Donohue, who serves as band director at Stevens Middle School. Performers in the band come from Sequim, Port Angeles, Joyce, Quilcene and Port Townsend.

The Bookaneer Market & Deli will be open for lunch.

For inclement weather, the alternate venue will be inside the PUB on PC campus.

Paint the Peninsula event kicks off Aug. 19

This year’s Paint the Peninsula plein air art festival is set for Aug. 19-26, with festivities centered abound the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Artists from across North America come to the Olympic Peninsula to paint outdoors, and then display their fresh work for the public each evening at the fine arts center. On Friday, Aug. 24, all 22 painters go to Port Angeles’ City Pier for the Paint Out, a high-speed event from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Also: Festive awards parties are set for Aug. 23 and Aug. 25, and as the finale, the petite painting show and sale happens Sunday, Aug. 26, at the fine arts center.
