Homeschool students set band concert

The Northwinds Homeschool Band performs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018 at Independent Bible Church 116 Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles. Led by director Dan Tutton, the event includes music from multiple performance groups, featuring several levels of the Northwinds Homeschool Concert and Jazz bands, respectively. The performances will include both Latin and swing jazz tunes, as well as holiday favorites.

The Northwinds Band is comprised of more than 70 local private and homeschool students from the Sequim and Port Angeles areas. The concert is free and open to the public.

Author invites readers to ‘Go Truckin’’

Olympic Peninsula author/photographer Lonnie Archibald’s new book “Let’s Go Truckin’” is now available at businesses in Sequim, Blyn, Forks, Port Angeles, Joyce, Clallam Bay and Aberdeen. The book is his third in which Olympic Peninsula truck drivers are featured. Their stories are told in this book which also contains many photos of local truckers, trucks, mills, roads, CB talk, businesses, maps, etc.

Businesses carrying Archibald’s books include Seven Cedars Casino in Blyn, Sequim Museum & Arts Center, Forage Gifts and Northwest Treasures in Sequim, and Jim’s Pharmacy, Odyssey Bookshop and Port Book and News in Port Angeles.

Archibald will be signing and selling his new book from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Mariner Café, 609 W. Washington St.

‘Fairy tale’ photo session set at college

Join the Peninsula College Digital Photography class for a one day session on “Fantasy Fairy Tale Photography” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, on the south lawn of the PUB building at the college’s main campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The session will be shot outside with costumed models using outdoor lighting setups and props. Students will be given direction on how to get the very best from their models.

Also covered will be how to evaluate different locations and environments, how to pose models and how to see color in new and exciting ways. Basic camera set-up for natural light will also be explained.

“I have endeavored to develop an alternative creative vehicle based upon my understanding of classic painting,” instructor Marina Shipova said. “I believe that by changing one’s perspective, even the ‘ordinary’ and/or ‘obvious’ can again become creative.”

Bready & Gravy do the Disco Detour

The Bread & Gravy Quintet will be performing from 8:30-10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Disco Bay Detour, 282332 US Highway 101 in Discovery Bay. There is no cover charge for the event at the all ages venue. Bread & Gravy plays a huge variety of music, from Americana and soul to blues and classic rock.

Christmas comes early with dinner-dance

Enjoy a Christmas dinner while listening and dancing with the Buck Ellard Band from 5:30-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

Lead guitar player Rodger Bigelow of Sequim will join in for the special event.

Cost is $10 per person and includes a festive meal, dessert and coffee, dozens of door prizes and more.

Monday Musicale set for Dec. 17

Monday Musicale’s next meeting is set for noon on Dec. 17, at the Queen of Angels Catholic Church Fellowship Hall, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. The meeting is followed at 1 p.m. by a free concert featuring the Northwest Women’s Chorale group.

Monday Musicale meets the third Monday of the month. Proceeds from memberships are used for scholarships for local high school musicians.

Drum circle sets new date for December get-together

The Peninsula Community Drum Circle,which normally meets the fourth Tuesday of the month, will meet Tuesday, Dec. 18, because of holiday schedules.

The drum circle meets from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the at the Olympic Unitarian Universalist fellowship hall, 1033 N. Barr Road, between Sequim and Port Angeles.

Book group considers ‘Border Songs’

The Novel Conversations Book Discussion Group meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, to talk about Jim Lynch’s “Border Songs” at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

To participate, simply read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed, and drop-ins are welcome.

Copies of “Border Songs” are available in various formats including regular print, large print, audiobook, and downloadable eBook, which may be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org. A limited number of copies of each book discussion selection are available at the Library the month prior to each meeting.
