Sequim book group to examine ‘The Garden of Evening Mists’

The Second Saturday Book Discussion Group meets to talk about at Tan Twan Eng’s “The Garden of Evening Mists” at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. To participate, simply read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed and drop-ins are welcome.

The book up for discussion is set in Malaya, 1951, and follows Yun Ling Teoh — the scarred lone survivor of a brutal Japanese wartime camp seeking solace among the jungle–fringed tea plantations of Cameron Highlands.

Copies of “The Garden of Evening Mists” are available in various formats including regular print, large print, audiobook on CD and downloadable eBook, which may be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org. A limited number of copies of each book discussion selection are available at the Library the month prior to each meeting. Music at the grange

Round Trip brings rock ‘n’ roll and country music to the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Road, from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 17. Cost is $10 and includes a meal.

PC’s Moving Pictures Film Fest set for June 6

The fifth-annual Moving Pictures Film Festival showcases video productions by students and alumni at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, in the Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Renne Emiko Brock, Multimedia Communications Program coordinator and instructor, will host a question-and-answer session the students to share about their successes after graduation and the digital video courses offered at the college.

Several of the festival films showcase nonprofits, local pride, highflying and educational adventures like Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, Lion Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Sequim Botanical Garden Society, KPTZ Radio, Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association, the Peninsula College Foundation and the award winning “On the Road” series.

The films are by David Burroughs, Cory Castillon, Elaine Cochran, Jack Cote, Ellie Dewhurst, Christopher Enges, Donna Geer, Yolanda Gonzales, Clara Hill, Jared Larson, Sebastian Niles-Blackheart, Anthony Richards, Rebecca Sherman, Briana Spencer, Lois Spicer and Michele White.

Fiddle campout set at grange

The Washington Old Time Fiddlers host a free “Fiddle Campout” June 8-10 at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

The campout includes: square dancing on June 8; fiddle, guitar and penny whistle workshops, along with a show from 1:30-3 p.m. on June 9, and gospel music from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on June 10. There will be jamming all weekend both inside and outside the grange hall.

Guest speaker Reece seeks to help ‘Find the ‘Funny’

“Find the Funny: The Why and How of Humor for Speakers, Storytellers, and Writers,” is the featured presentation by guest speaker Rebecca Reece at the Skwim Toastmasters’ next Second Tuesday Guest Speaker Series, set for 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at The Gathering Place in Sunland, 135 Fairway Dr.

Reece, a Gig Harbor native, is an award-winning humorous speaker, writer and graphic artist. She uses these skills in her passionate advocacy work for the Foster Care System and as a social media and marketing consultant. Last year she represented the Toastmasters Division at the District’s Humorous Speech Contest in Alaska.

Skwim Toastmasters is part of Toastmasters International, a worldwide nonprofit educational organization that empowers individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. The Sequim club meets on the first, second and third Tuesdays of the month.
