PC jazz ensemble sets fall quarter concert

Under the direction of Dr. David P. Jones, the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble hosts its Fall Quarter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Maier Hall on the main college campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. There is no admission for the concert.

Featured at the concert is Robbin Eaves performing Kurt Weill’s “September Song” as well as the 1960s Bobby Webb R&B hit, “Sunny.” Olga Palenga will sing “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and the Tommy Dorsey hit, “Lamp is Low.” The 15-piece PC jazz ensemble add instrumentals by Duke Ellington (“Cottontail” and “I Got It Bad”), Sonny Rollins (“Oleo”), Wayne Shorter (“El Gaucho”) and others, including two original compositions by the band’s director.

The group is currently a large jazz big band (violin, flute, clarinet, four saxes, trumpet, euphonium, two trombones and rhythm section). Sequim-area musicians in the group include Kate Powers (violin), Scott Sizer (trumpet), Jeff Dingle (trombone) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums).

OPAA meeting to feature Snider’s work

The Olympic Peninsula Arts Association hosts a potluck meeting from 9:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, Dec. 6, at Saints Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., featuring local artist Lance Snider.

Snider said he has been obsessed with art for as long as he can remember. A nature lover in real life, his art often includes his favorite animals — particularly pachyderms and cephalopods. He’s also very drawn to people and “the stories behind their eyes.”

Though he dabbles in pretty much every medium, Snider said charcoal is his favorite. He has also taken up wire sculpting lately.

Sequim’s McLain featured at Harbor Art Gallery

Gail McLain, Harbor Art Gallery’s Artist of the Month for December, will be at the gallery during the Second Saturday Art Walk from 5-7:30 p.m. on Dec. 8, and during gallery hours (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

McLain and her husband Scott are longtime Sequim residents with their dog and horse. She grew up south of Seattle, and after graduating from the University of Washington with a major in graphic design, she worked for Boeing as a production illustrator before moving to the Olympic Peninsula. She retired from the City of Port Angeles Light Division as an electrical engineering specialist.
