‘Build It!’ at peninsula libraries

Children are invited to construct LEGO creations and build stories about them at monthly Build It! programs, hosted on Saturdays at North Olympic Library System branches.

Youths will be encouraged to let their imaginations run free while they construct their own creations using LEGO bricks. Participants will be encouraged to write a story about their creation, which will be photographed during the program.

Parents or caregivers are asked to accompany all children under age 8.

All materials will be provided, and LEGO bricks and creations will remain in the library at the conclusion of each program.

Build It! programs at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., are from 2-4 p.m. on Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Jan. 4, Feb. 1 and March 7. Programs at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., are from 10 a.m.-noon on Nov. 16, Dec. 21, Jan. 25, Feb. 29 and March 28.

Research shows that creative play is important in the development of reading and critical thinking skills, library representatives say, adding that libraries across the country offer programs using LEGO bricks to encourage young people and families to play and build together.

The library system’s LEGO collection was built with the support of the North Olympic Library Foundation, Friends of Sequim Library, Port Angeles Friends of the Library, Girl Scouts of Western Washington and brick donations from library patrons.
