Community invited to ‘Share the Trail’

The Mt. Olympus Chapter Back Country Horsemen of Washington and Olympic National Park are sponsoring a Share the Trail event for hikers, runners, bicycle riders, horse and mule riders and packers, and llama packers on Saturday, April 28.

The free event will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Upper Elwha Community Center west of Port Angeles at 90 Old State Road.

To get there, travel south on Herrick Road, about a mile west of the Elwha bridge on US Highway 101, and follow the signs to the community center.

Share the Trail will include informational booths set up by Olympic National Park, Department of Natural Resources, Olympic Discovery Trail, Clallam Conservation District, Sound Bikes and Kayaks, and other entities. The event will also include hands-on mule packing demonstrations as well as presentations and information on Leave No Trace ethics to practice while hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping.

There will be activities geared toward children of all ages as well, including craft stations, pony and horse rides and Leave No Trace activities and prizes.

Community members are invited to gather maps on the different trail systems in the area, learn about how horses and mules help to keep trails open for multiple user groups, how to safely pass horses, mules and llamas on the trail and much more.

The Mt. Olympus Chapter Back Country Horsemen of Washington will be serving hot dogs and chili.
