Deadline for Young Artist Competition nears

Applications for the 2018 Nico Snel Young Artist Competition are being accepted. Deadline for applications is Dec. 15.

The competition, set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles, is free and open to the public.

The 32nd-annual Young Artist Competition is open to any North Olympic Peninsula student instrumentalist or vocalist aged 4-22 (at the time of competition) who did not win first place in the senior competition the preceding year. Cash prizes are $500 for first, $250 for second and $200 for third.

The 12th-annual Junior Young Artist Competition was designed for students who may not be ready for the Young Artist Competition and is open to any local student instrumentalist (piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussionist, etc.) aged 14 or younger who did not win first place in the junior or senior competition the preceding year. Cash prizes are $250 for first, $125 for second and $75 for third.

This year’s judges are: Denise Dillenbeck, Port Angeles Chamber Orchestra violin soloist and violin professor at Central Washington University; Linda Dowdell, internationally renowned composer and pianist; Anne Krabill, principal oboe, Port Angeles and Port Townsend Symphony orchestras, and Jonathan Pasternack, Music Director and Conductor for the Port Angeles Symphony.
