Free family movie series returns to Sequim Library

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program, the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., offers a free Family Movie Series on Fridays at 2 p.m., July 14- Aug. 18. The free series will provide out-of-the-sun family entertainment, snacks and fun movie trivia.

The series kicks-off July 14 with a screening of “Chicken Little.” In a salute to the original European folk tale, this G-rated film has a Turkey Lurkey, a Foxy Loxy and even a Goosey Loosey. When the sky really is falling and sanity has flown the coop, who will rise to save the day? Together with his hysterical band of misfit friends, Chicken Little must save the planet from an alien invasion and prove that the world’s biggest hero is a little chicken.

Storks” will come to the screen on July 21. Storks have moved on from delivering babies to packages. But when an order for a baby appears, the top delivery stork must scramble to fix the error by delivering the baby. This PG-rated film is colorfully animated with a charming cast.

Because of Winn-Dixie” continues the summer movie series on July 28. This family film is adapted from the Newbery Honor award-winning book of the same name written by well-known author Kate DiCamillo. The film depicts a 10-year-old girl, abandoned by her mother when she was 3, who moves to a small town in Florida with her father, a preacher. While there, she adopts a stray dog whom she names after the local supermarket where he was found. With her goofy pooch by her side, she meets an eclectic group of townspeople and rekindles an almost lost relationship with her father.

On Aug. 4, take your family to see “Over the Hedge,” an animated PG-rated film that tells the story of a raccoon who steals a bear’s winter stash of food. When the bear threatens retaliation, the raccoon fools a mismatched family of forest creatures into stealing food from humans to repay the bear and save himself.

Continuing on Aug. 11, “Mars Needs Moms” will be offered for family entertainment. Milo finds out how much he needs his mom when she’s taken by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness and use her brain to instruct Martian robots about raising children. On Mars, the female babies are nursed by robots while the male babies are dumped in the junkyard under the command of Supervisor.

The Summer Movie Series will conclude on Friday, Aug. 18, with a screening of “Shaun the Sheep Movie.” Shaun the sheep is tired of doing the same work at the farm every day. He decides to take a day off but he needs to make sure the farmer doesn’t know. A mix up with the farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it’s up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home. This PG-rated film is loaded with fun and excitement.

About the reading series

The theme for the 2017 Summer Reading Program is “Build a Better World.” This summertime celebration encourages children to keep reading during the summer break from school and features a reading challenge and a multitude of events for all ages.

Research shows that children who do not read during the summer experience “summer slide” and may lose up to a month of the instructional knowledge they gained during the previous school year, NOLS officials said. Library summer reading programs have been shown to help alleviate the “summer slide” by providing access to books, enrichment activities and encouraging young people to keep reading.

The Summer Reading Program runs through Saturday, Aug. 19.

The program is supported by the Friends of the Library at all four NOLS libraries.

For more information about the Summer Reading Program and other events for young people, visit www.nols.org, call 683-1161 or email youth@nols.org.
