Healthy hearts, Sounders, outdoor fun and more

Morning Camp

The week started off with a field trip out to Robin Hill Park. The kids walked the nature trail and learned about all the different types of plants and foliage that surround the trail. They were entertained by a very curious squirrel that followed them on their walk.

At the club, the kids made homemade birdfeeders and sugar cookies and had a Hula Hoop and Double Dutch competition.

The week ended with a trip out to Quilicene to tour the Wilkinson farm. The farm is more than 100 years old. The kids were treated to an archery demonstration and got to see a 50-foot tall trebuchet fling a 50-pound ball farther than 300 yards.

Junior Rangers

The Junior Rangers had an “extended” trip out to the Hoh Rain Forest. Because of the Elwha Bridge being closed, Rangers had to take the long way around the Lake Crescent. After a four-hour drive, the Rangers were treated to a wonderful hike along the Hoh River where they got to see the “moss tree” and had a wonderful lunch by the river.

Teen Room

Our teens were very busy this week. This week’s bowling trip was highlighted by our very own Saul Williams picking up the very difficult 2-10 split. This has become a very popular trip and the teens are really picking up this wonderful sport.

The teens headed to Lake Crescent again this week. The smoke from the Canadian fires and low cloud cover did not deter our kids from having a blast. The teens look forward to this trip every week.

The teens really worked hard getting our building ready for the annual Rotary Salmon Bake. Teen director Stephen Silliman and crew mowed, swept and cleaned the entire building and worked hard at the event ensuring all the participants had everything they needed. Stephen really has our teens excited about volunteering.

At the club

With Brain Gain coming to an end, our focus turned to our Kids Take Heart program this week. Kids Take Heart is a partnership with the Hope Foundation and Safeway. The program is geared to teach our kids the importance of a healthy heart. The kids learned the anatomy of the heart and were taught how to read nutrition labels. They will be touring Safeway next week, learning how to be a healthy shopper.

We took our kids to the Seattle Sounders game on Saturday. The Sounders played Sporting Kansas City. It was a beautiful day in Seattle and the Sounders won 1-0 on a header by superstar Clint Dempsey.

It was Talent Week at the Club. We held a dance and singing competition. The club was rocking and rolling with several amazing dance routines and the singing competition highlighted several very talented kids with amazing voices. We truly have very talented kids here at the club.
