Historical society hosts genealogy summer school program

The Clallam County Genealogical Society is offering its Genealogy Summer School Program on June 10, for everyone who wishes to find out more about their family’s history at the Dungeness School House, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and the program runs from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Bring a sack lunch.

This year’s theme will be, “Going Deeper into Your Genealogy.” Topics to be discussed include census records, Ancestry.com, Findmypast.com and DNA research.

“Census records are the most used and, at the same time, the most under-utilized of all genealogical resources,” said Roberta Griset, who will demonstrate how federal census records can lead to other informative records.

Jim Johnson, president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists and director of the Heritage Quest Library, will update summer school participants on new databases recently added to Ancestry.com and demonstrate how to effectively use them. He also will have books and products of the Heritage Quest Booksellers available for purchase.

Findmypast.com is a website that has acquired over 8,000 different databases useful for genealogical research. Virginia Majewski, president of the Clallam County Genealogical Society, will introduce and guide attendees through this remarkable research tool. Both Ancestry.com and Findmypast.com are available for anyone to use, at no charge, at the CCGS Research Center, 402 Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

DNA has become a powerful research tool for many genealogists. Like many other genealogical tools, most searchers just scratch the surface and think they’ve “got it.” CCGS member Marolyn Russell will speak about how you should critically analyze DNA results before changing your family tree.

The cost for the program is $30 to CCGS and Sequim Museum members. All non-members and late registrants will be charged $35. Early registration ends Wednesday, June 7. Payment can be mailed to CCGS or made through PayPal on the CCGS website, clallamcogs.org. You may also register and pay at the door.

To register, call 417-5000, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. Information also is available at clallamcogs.org.
