‘Landfill Harmonic’ plays at library; Paraguayan musical group plays instruments made of garbage

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program, the documentary film, “Landfill Harmonic” will be shown at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 25.

“Landfill Harmonic” follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight. Under the guidance of idealistic music director Favio Chavez, the orchestra must navigate a strange new world of arenas and sold-out concerts.

However, when a natural disaster strikes their community, Chavez must find a way to keep the orchestra intact and provide a source of hope for their town. The film is a testimony to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit.

The theme for the 2017 Summer Reading Program is “Build a Better World.” This summertime celebration, which encourages people of all ages to read throughout the summer, features a reading challenge and a multitude of events for adults. The Summer Reading Program is supported by the Friends of the Library at all four NOLS libraries.
