Learn all about kale from a Master Gardener

Veteran Master Gardener Bob Cain will share tips for successfully growing, harvesting, and cooking many varieties of kale at noon on Thursday, April 26, in the county commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

In “The Wonderful World of Kale,” Cain will cover the origins and historical significance of kales and the soil requirements and conditions for growing kale. He will explain the rainbow of available kale varieties, what grows well in Clallam County, new varieties, and plant breeding. He will also provide tips for harvesting and storing kale and will share a few of his favorite kale recipes.

A Master Gardener since 2009, Cain earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in biology and chemistry and has a PhD in chemistry. He has 40 years of experience growing vegetables in Scotland, Ireland, Colorado and Washington state. He writes a monthly article on plant disease for the Master Gardener Newsletter and is a frequent contributor to gardening columns in the Sequim Gazette.

Cain was recognized as the 2009 Intern of the Year and 2011 Master Gardener of the Year, served as the Garden Manger of the Woodcock Demonstration Garden and is Past President of the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County.
