Local Toastmasters win, advance in speech contests

Skwim Toastmasters, Sequim’s Toastmasters Club, held its annual International Speech and Evaluation Contest on Feb. 26, with three contestants competing in each contest.

Taking top honors in the International Speech Contest is M.E. Bartholomew, with second place going to Terralene Burnham.

Terry Barrett won the Evaluation Contest, followed by runner-up Craig Barron.

Bartholomew and Barrett will represent the Sequim club in competition with other Area 21 contestants from Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Poulsbo clubs, as they advance to the next level contest set for noon-2 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at the Kitsap Regional Library, 700 NE Lincoln Road, Poulsbo.

Admission is free and the public is invited.

“The audience’s response to my speech was inspiring,” Bartholomew said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to present it again and see if it will do as well there.”

Bartholomew added, “It would be lovely for Terry Barrett and I to have friendly faces at the next level to support us.”

Skwim Toastmasters is part of Toastmasters International, a worldwide nonprofit educational organization that empowers individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.

The Sequim club meets every Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at The Gathering Place in Sunland, 135 Fairway Drive.
