Local watercolorist to demonstrate skills at next Olympic Peninsula Art Association meeting

The Olympic Peninsula Art Association presents a program and demonstration by Sally Cays on Thursday, March 23, in the Parish Hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for a meet and greet, followed by a short business meeting followed by a program and Cays’ demonstration; visitors always are welcome and the club’s demonstrations always are free.

Cays’ watercolor paintings reflect her love of intense color and strong contrasts, and express the beauty she sees in the world around her with what she calls “the luminous quality of watercolor.” Although many of her paintings are florals and still lifes, as she has grown in her art she has included wildlife, landscape and portrait paintings; as well as award-winning, highly detailed colored pencil, ink and charcoal drawings.

A primarily self-taught artist who has original paintings and prints of her paintings in collections both across this country and internationally, Cays has been represented by galleries in Washington, Oregon and California. Her original paintings currently are featured in the Heatherton Gallery in Port Angeles.

Cays conducts about four watercolor workshops per year in Sequim and Port Angeles, and also has taught workshops at Daniel Smith in Seattle and in Silverdale. She previously turned one of her workshops into an online course, “Portraits of Children,” and has taught students online from as far away as Tasmania, Australia. The course is no longer available online, but she is in the process of converting her workshop “Silver and Lace” into book format which will be available in print and on Kindle in the near future.

Her work has been featured and has won awards in regional, national and international exhibitions.

She is a signature member of The Northwest Watercolor Society and a juried member of Women Painters of Washington. An original watercolor “From Our Garden” is featured in the book “Splash 5 Best of Watercolor; The Glory of Color.” Three of her paintings — “Trilogy,” “Tribute” and “Saturday Market” — are included in the book “The Best of Watercolor, Splash 6; The Magic of Texture,” both books published by North Light Books.
