Master Gardener to talk raspberries

On Saturday, June 16, veteran Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will talk about growing red, yellow, black and purple raspberries at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

The “Raspberries of a Different Color: Going beyond Red” presentation is set for 10-11 a.m. and is part of the “Saturdays in the Garden” educational series sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Though red raspberries are most popular among modern-day gardeners, yellow, black and purple raspberries also are available. All are easy to grow, Master Gardeners say, but they differ not only in the color of the berries (and their flavors and uses) but the bushes on which they grow and necessary care.

During this presentation, Stehr-Green will help local gardeners add color to their raspberry patch by describing the different types of raspberries, contrasting their growth patterns and fruit characteristics with the more commonly grown red raspberry. As a result of the presentation, gardeners will know how best to plant these other kinds of raspberries and provide the pruning and trellising care that they need.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003. She writes articles for the Sequim Gazette and Peninsula Daily News and participates in a monthly call-in gardening show on KONP. She is a berry enthusiast and has provided many talks on all sorts of berries.

She not only enjoys growing and eating berries but also likes teaching others about them.

The Woodcock Demonstration Garden demonstrates a broad range of ornamental and edible plants, water-wise gardening, fire safe landscaping, composting and garden design. The garden has a covered outdoor pavilion where educational programs are held from May through October.

“Saturdays in the Garden” presentations are free and open to the public and occur rain or shine.
