Milestone: ‘Hands-on History’ winners earn scholarships

Five winners were named in the Hands-On History competition held April 15.

The students are Peter Zelenka, Cecilia Estrada Elena, Raven Taylor, Emaleigh Smith, and the team of Talia Anderson, Abby Sanders, and Maize Tucker.

Hamilton Elementary School student Zelenka’s paper titled, “The Ferries of Lake Crescent,” earned him a $500 scholarship in junior division.

Anderson, Sanders and Tucker wrote “Unleashing the Beast: The Elwha River Restoration Project,” which placed second in the junior division and a $500 scholarship for the Port Angeles High School freshman.

First-place in the senior division was Forks High School junior Estrada Elena. She won a $1,500 scholarship for her paper about Minerva Troy, a nurse and artist.

“The Manis Mastodon Site” by PAHS freshman Taylor, and “Scandinavian Settlement at Lake Ozette” by Smith, Olympic Christian School eighth-grader, won junior division commendation awards and $75 gift cards from Port Book & News.

Three judges examined the papers during a public presentation Sunday, attended by about 100 people.

The competition sponsored by the North Olympic History Center, formerly the Clallam County Historical Society.

All five papers are available to read online at www.clallamhistoricalsociety.com.
