Milestone: Rotary Club of Sequim honors Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Sequim recently recognized three Student of the Month award winners from Sequim High School at a recent luncheon. Mary Budke, Rotary’s chairperson for Student of the Month recognitions, read letters to the students and audience from the student’s teachers identifying their many accomplishments.

January’s Student of the Month is Porter Funston, a 17-year-old Sequim High junior who was selected by her teachers for her excellent problem-solving skills and hard-work ethics. Funston excels in mathematics and plans to pursue an education and career in bio-engineering.

Sequim High senior Haelee Andres, February’s Student of the Month, participates in Rotary’s Interact Club at Sequim High and is described as a humble leader, supporting “Walk for Water” to raise funds to purchase cisterns for families in Kenya. She is a liaison for coordinating events with the Leadership Class, the City of Sequim, local service clubs and with United Way, creating a lettering opportunity for Sequim High youths participating in community service projects. Andres designed and led a beautification project on Sequim High School’s campus as well as participating in the mural at Whimsy Park. She plans to attend Central Washington University and become an art teacher.

March’s Student of the Month is Arlene Law, a 4.0 grade-point-average student at Sequim High. Law excels in math, science and is described as an effective communicator with a great work ethic and good at time management. Law is the junior class ASB advisor, participates in school activities, tennis and is employed. Arlene plans to pursue sign language as a career.

The Rotary Club of Sequim identifies a student each month of the school year who exemplifies good citizenship, has good grades, participates in extra-curricular activities and contributes to the community.

Each student of the month receives a letter from the Rotary Club to use in their scholarship notebooks recognizing the student’s exemplary qualities, a Certificate of Recognition for display and a commemorative collector coin from the Rotary Club of Sequim.
