OTA casts Chekhov-inspired comedy

Olympic Theatre Arts has announced the cast for the final production of its 2016-2017 season. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” written by contemporary playwright Christopher Durang, won the Tony award for best play in 2013.

Director Jim Guthrie has chosen a strong cast to stage this quirky comedy that revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged siblings.

Vanya and Sonia, two of the siblings, will be played by Ron Graham and Sara Nicholls. They live at the ancestral family residence in Bucks County, Pa. Movie star sister Masha, played by Angela Poynter, has supported them for years. She arrives for a visit sporting her new “boy-toy” Spike, played by E.J. Anderson.

Also residing at the house is Cassandra, played by Jennifer Horton, who is prone to making dire prophecies that no one believes. To stir things up a bit more, Spike dashes to the property’s pond for a dip and encounters a lovely neighbor girl, Nina, played by Melissa Karapostoles. She proceeds to provoke envy in Masha, lust in Spike and sympathy in Vanya.

In its review of the play, USA Today said, “Few contemporary playwrights have proven as deft as Durang at mining the absurdity and the dangers of human folly.”

The play contains many references to Anton Chekhov, acclaimed Russian playwright of the 19th century, including the names of the siblings, but according to Guthrie, “The most important thing is that Durang is just plain funny. This play is a mash-up of Chekhov, but the people don’t have to know anything about Chekhov to enjoy it.”

The comedy opens June 9 and runs for three weekends through June 25 at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave. Tickets are now on sale online at www.olympictheatrearts.org or through the theater box office, open 1-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, contact the office at 683-7326.
