OTA sets auditions for ‘Phantom Tollbooth’

Olympic Theatre Arts will host main character auditions for the Children’s Theatre summer production of “The Phantom Tollbooth” on three consecutive Wednesday afternoons in June.

Auditions will be held in the OTA Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave., beginning at 3:30 p.m. on June 6, 13 and 20.

Candidates need only attend one of the audition dates but are welcome to attend more than one. They will be asked to cold read from the script by directors Bonne Smith and Lisa Mantchev.

“The Phantom Tollbooth” will run from Aug. 31 through Sept. 9.

A second round of auditions for ensemble roles will be in early August. The play has plenty of opportunities for speaking and non-speaking roles, experienced thespians and newcomers, OTA officials say.

The directors will schedule some optional table reads in July and rehearsals will begin in earnest the week of Aug. 6, where attendance will be mandatory (unless conflicts have been pre-approved). This early audition is intended to give the main character actors time over the summer to read the play and understand their roles. Additional auditions may also be scheduled for Aug. 1 and Aug. 4 to cast some of the cameo and ensemble roles.

OTA will be charging a participation fee for this year’s production to help to offset the production costs.

“This experience is intended to be a learning vehicle where the participants will be guided through the many facets of the production process by industry professionals,” OTA executive director Carol Willis says. “We feel that such an educational experience has value.”

Participation fees are set at $150 for the 5 week session, including performance weekends.

OTA class and workshop members from the prior two sessions will be offered a discount as will OTA “family members.”
