Polar explorer inspires Scouts

Aaron Linsdau, polar explorer and motivational speaker, came to Sequim to speak to the Scouts on Jan. 19 at Sequim Community Church. More than 100 Scouts, parents and friends enjoyed his presentation filled with slides and stories about the obstacles he over came on the journey, frequently invoking the how the Scout motto: “Be prepared” came in handy.

Lindsau is a Eagle Scout and one of only two Americans to ever ski solo to the South Pole at an elevation of 9,301 feet. His presentation focused on how Scouting had helped him develop the courage, attitude, perseverance and resilience to attempt and complete such a challenging goal. His trip took 82 days and covered over 720 miles while towing over 300 pounds of gear behind him. All of the trip was by himself on the ground, where he consumed 6,000 calories a day and still lost 30 pounds. He experienced days of complete whiteout conditions with hurricane force winds and temperatures of minus 55 degrees. He spoke about setting personal goals and how those goals are always yours.
