Rock, gem show set for March 17-18 in Port Angeles

Sponsored by the City of Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department and coordinated by the Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association, the annual Rock, Gem & Jewelry Show is set for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 17, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The event is free and open to the community.

Knowledgeable vendors will bring an amazing inventory of rocks, crystals, fossils, minerals, jewelry, gem trees and many other items. Look for favorites among returning vendors and new and unusual items from newer vendors. In addition, Rock Alley will be open, offering all the favorite children’s games plus some new ones with prizes to choose from.

The featured speaker on Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 p.m. will be Dann May, adjunct professor of geology at Peninsula College. His presentation will be “The Cascadia Subduction Zone and the Coming Megathrust Earthquake.” In addition, the “Peninsula Emergency Preparedness Guide” is available free while the supply last, compliments of the Peninsula Daily News.

Visit Demonstration Central from 10 a.m.-noon both days to see demonstrations on cabochon making, faceting, wire wrap and metal smithing. While there, sign up for a chance to win a free Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association membership and free class (must be 18 years old to enter).

All food is prepared by the Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula-Port Angeles Unit. The show also features a raffle containing jewelry, rocks, a rock tumbler and more.
