Rodlend finds flight in ravens with latest art show

Sequim artist Carrie Rodlend has had a keen eye on the sky in recent months.

Since the summer, she’s focused her work on ravens — reading about them and learning their calls — while perfecting her pictures of the birds. Now, she’s opening up her studio off Lotzegesell Road to show more than 30 pieces for her “Ravens and their Landscapes” art show. It opens 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at 562 Holgerson Road.

Each raven is created with Indian ink, Rodlend said, with landscapes done in acrylics.

Her art shows are a side endeavor to her “Carrie Art” teachings, which she started in 1982 by going to local schools to teach art. Rodlend, an England-native, continues to teach “Carrie Art” at Helen Haller Elementary in Sequim on Wednesdays and at Franklin Elementary School in Port Angeles starting in January with funding provided by private donors and parent groups.

Rodlend continues to offer private lessons for children and adults. She worked side-by-side with students on some of the ravens. She’s kept dozens of practice pieces of the ravens as a reminder to herself and her students that learning to draw and/or paint something is a process.

“You’ve just got to keep going,” she said.

Turning her attention to ravens came at the suggestion of a neighbor Carl Hatton, she said, which she’d never drawn/painted before. Another neighbor, Ken Wiersema, loaned her some books on ravens for instruction too.

At her show, Rodlend offers 6-inch-by-6-inch works of fruit, other paintings from previous shows, greeting cards, prints, gift certificates, and more. She’ll offer light refreshments too. For more information, call 681-0104. Parking is available near the studio.

Rodlend also hosts marimba classes on Thursday nights for “enthusiastic adults,” she said.
