Kindergarten students at Helen Haller have been studying weather and seasons. Vanessa Rayburn’s students were asked which season was their favorite:

“Winter is my favorite season because you can play in the snow and be cold.” — Nevaeh Norlin

“My favorite season is spring because flowers bloom and baby animals are born.” — Harper Barrett

“I like summer because it gets really hot!” — Walter Thomas

“I like summer because I think I’m going to the beach with a tent and me and my family play water games. I like getting my feet wet.” — Logan Barton

“Winter! I make a snowball.” — James Melvin

“I love spring because it’s almost time for summer.” — Kayden Connely

“Summer is when I play soccer and that’s really fun.” — Alisa Arriola

“I love winter because I can build a snowman and a snow fort and throw snowballs.” — Christian Furnish

“I like spring because baby animals are born.” — Gabrielle Noe-Janssen

“Spring is the best because flowers grow and blossom on the trees.” — Sophie Christian

“I like summer because it’s hot and I can go to the pool!” — Camila Lopez

“Spring! All the flowers come out and it’s beautiful.” — Jodi Oiness

“Spring, because I put Easter eggs behind a birds nest and put them all over the place.” — Dmarko Green

“I like summer. I can catch tree frogs in the summer and play at the beach. I climb trees and lick popsicles outside if it is hot.” — Colton Vance

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

The first track meet of the year for Sequim Middle School’s team is Tuesday, April 30, in Forks. The first home meet for the Timberwolves is Wednesday, May 15, at the Sequim High School stadium.

OLYMPIC PENINSULA ACADEMY

Before spring break, Olympic Peninsula Academy students took a field trip to the Hurd Creek Hatchery. They were able to feed the trout in the ponds and even release the young salmon fry they raised over the winter. Our students had an exciting teachable moment when they learned about how hatchery fish are distinguished from wild populations and got to see a tag being removed from a fish that did not make it to release. Tara, a hatchery staffer, was happy to teach our curious students about how these tags provide valuable information to the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.

On April 16, Christine and Gaby from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration came to our school with a life-sized humpback whale, for our fifth- and eighth-graders. Students had an opportunity to learn about these unique marine species that inhabit the water off our coast, inside and out. Whales are a vital part of our marine ecosystems and students learned a lot about this fascinating keystone species. What a blast!

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

The Sequim High School Culinary Arts Class participated in the Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County’s fourth-annual Taste of the Peninsula on Saturday, April 13. Students prepared two dishes both inspired by ingredients that can be found at the Sequim Food Bank. The first dish was a Russian bratwurst potato soup, a recipe supplied to the class by chef Art Meyer, adviser to the class. The bratwurst was processed from a pig that was raised through the Sequim Agriculture Science class. The second taste was a salted caramel apple pie bar with a shortbread crust. Students prepared both dishes from scratch. The students sought to show that delicious, different and healthy meals can be prepared with what the food bank provides to the community. The Culinary Class thanks Andra Smith, executive director of the Sequim Food Bank, and Colleen Robinson, director of Clallam County Habitat for Humanity for their support.
