GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
More than 100 fifth-graders received certificates from their teachers in front of a group of proud parents at the school’s 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony on June 15. Principal Donna Hudson introduced them, saying, “The two characteristics that these students have are kindness and hard work. Usually people who work hard and are kind are very successful members of their community.”
During library time, Greywolf students researched topics related to Earth Day. Then, to celebrate both Earth Day and National Poetry month, they wrote poems using nouns and verbs we brainstormed as class.

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Students in Gail Kite’s class were invited to write a poem, personal narrative or expository paragraph about “Summer”:
During this summer I hope to do these things: go to the park and ride my bike, go camping with my family, have sleep overs with my friends, go to the beach, and read all of my Six Books For Summer. I also hope to go to Glass Beach for sea glass. I hope to have my friend from Texas come over. I also hope to go to the Game Farm. There are many other things I would like to do this summer but I can’t list them all.
— Megan Savage
This summer will be a blast
Not like any in the past
We’ll play all day and have lots of fun
And we only stop when we want it to be done
This summer will be extra sandy
It will be full of lots of candy
This summer there’s lots to bake
Cookies, cupcakes, bread and cake
There will be no cleaning of the sink
Only coloring the family dog pink
In the pool we will dive deep
And by midnight no one will be asleep
Well, maybe now it’s time to rest
Tomorrow will be the best
— Sienna Dahlquist
My perfect summer birthday this summer will be camping with six or more friends. We will roast hotdogs, marshmallows, starbursts, and more. We will climb trees. We will play games, like Minute to Win It or fun running games like tag or hide and seek. We will have a water balloon fight. At night we’ll tell scary stories by the bright, big, beautiful fire that glows like the sun. I’ll be as warm as can be. Finally, the sun will rise. Everyone will leave the next day and we will go to my grandma’s house and have pancakes with whip cream and butter and chocolate syrup. As I fall asleep, I will know I had a great 11th birthday.
— Lexy Amaya
I like summer
It is funner
I got my shades
Then I gaze
At the ocean
There is a commotion
I got my hands
In the sand
I was out
And about
I had so much fun
In the sun
I was at the deep
Then I was asleep
— Journey Simpson
Students in Shannon Prescott’s fourth-grade class finished up the year with a math project where students had to create and build a model taco truck.
In the first part, students created and designed a taco truck based on real world models. Then they researched menu items in order to come up with their own menu.
Later, they assigned prices to each of their ingredients. Students practiced ordering tacos from each other.
Once students had their order they practice adding decimals by totaling the amount each student ordered.
In the second part of the project, students constructed a three-dimensional model of their food truck.
Students examined real world floor plans of food trucks. Using grid paper, they plotted out where their ovens, counters, trash cans, storage, driver, etc., all was going to fit into their truck.
After it was plotted students found the perimeter, area, and volume of each piece of equipment.
Finally, some students were able to construct three-dimensional models of their equipment.
