DISTRICT

On Monday, May 29, there is no school and the district office will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Third-grade students planted about 300 trees under the supervision of M&R and Alta Forest Products at a nearby logging site in Sequim. Teacher Sheri Burke said, “This is the third year we have committed to planting trees for the future and we loved it! Students learn about our renewable resource and gain insight into the day and life of a forester.”

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In celebration of our 122nd Irrigation Festival, the students in Jaysa Hill’s class have written a collection of lists, poems and paragraphs to highlight what they love about their Sequim community.

Sequim by Makenna Hillman

Some people say my house is a maze.

Eat, dance, sleep is what my family does.

Quick and quiet to bed at night.

Unfamiliar faces around.

Implements instruments, tools, utensils are what my dad uses.

My house is hairy from my dogs.

Washington by Makenna Hillman

Washing my dog is fun.

A dog came over named Lady.

Same days over and over again.

Has a different neighborhood.

I am excited.

Nate is my half-brother.

“Great day,” my parents say every morning.

Took a water balloon and squeezed it.

On the day of carnival it’s crazy.

Not a joke.

I love Sequim, Washington, and my house. My house is huge. My house is like a maze. Sequim is a small town. Washington looks like a tortoise on the map. By Makenna Hillman

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

Seventh-grade Honors classes have been working on scale drawings for the past few weeks. They had to make a scale drawing of an NBA basketball court to the size of a gummy bear. Once they made a scale drawing, the size had to be doubled and made into a scale model of their basketball court.

The two classes started talking about whose class will have the best model and well … the competition was on between Shannon Paselk and Richard Miko. On Wednesday, May 10, during lunch all the seventh-graders will have a chance to look at all of the projects on display and vote for the basketball court they like the best. There are some pretty good courts!

Soroptimists of Sequim have adopted a service project called Days for Girls with involvement from some SMS girls after school. The mission project is creating a more dignified, free and educated world through access to lasting feminine hygiene solutions. The girls will be helping to prepare items for the Days for Girls Kits. These kits will then be sent to the girls around to world to enable them to be free to attend school and advance their learning.

Their first meeting was May 9 and it was a huge success. Participants included Malory Morey, Lauren Sundin, Lacey Loewen, Alyssa Bonheyo, Kristina Baker, Cassidy Crecelius, Abigail Carlson, Madelyn Pickens, Julia Jeffers and Keyana Cundiff.

A website to visit is www.daysforgirls.org with more information about this project.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

Erin Dwyer’s report: Senior Ball was a blast! Thanks to SHS class president Danica Miller who organized this beautiful dance, I think everyone will agree when I say it was quite the hit.

The dance, held on May 6 at Canterwood Golf and Country Club in Gig Harbor, came at a perfect time, with seniors just finishing their AP testing and so happy to have a break.

This last dance was an amazing experience, bringing everyone together to share a last memory before graduation.

The marching band, under the direction of Vernon Fosket, will participate in the Rhody Parade in Port Townsend on Saturday, May 20.

Instructor Bill Seabolt says, “We have been partnering with Armstrong Marine this year in Advanced Welding class. This last month we received a project that they planned out. Upon completion Armstrong graded the projects and chose which student to job shadow at Armstrong Marine for a day. That student was Cameron Dunning. This is an indicator of the progress we are having with partnering with local industry.

Cameron Dunning also was the Vocational Rotary Student of the Month in April.”

The Sequim High School Operetta Club presents “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” for three remaining performances in the auditorium. Performances are Thursday, May 18, at 6 p.m., Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 20, at 7 p.m. For more details about pricing and to purchase tickets, go to www.shsoperetta.org.
