HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Thanks to two community education grants from Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma titled “Reading Success with Fluency” and “Fluency Success with Early Readers,” students at Helen Haller Elementary School are becoming more proficient readers with fluency.

The grants enable Helen Haller reading specialist Betsy Smith to buy the online fluency reading program Read Naturally Live for students in second, third and fourth grades. Students access the program while participating in Smith’s after-school reading club as well as during the school day. Students in kindergarten and first grade will be able to practice fluency with engaging leveled informational books.

Louise Potter recently delivered the two checks to the reading program on behalf of the Community Education Grant Committee of Beta Nu.

The teachers, staff, and students of Helen Haller Elementary School send a great big “Thank You” to Beta Nu Chapter.

Want to be a reading tutor? Check out how you can help students at Helen Haller become proficient readers with tutor sessions set for 3:15-4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Haller library. Prospective tutors are asked to attend both sessions.

Tutors need to complete an online application on the district’s website (www.sequimschools.org, navigate to the application via the “Resources” tab). They also need to submit a current Washington state driver’s license for a background check; clearance is good for one year.

Contact reading specialist Betsy Smith at 360-583-3260 or bsmith@sequimschools.org for more information.
