AARP’s group of tax-time assistants are seeking some help themselves, as they aid locals in preparing federal income tax returns.

TAX-AIDE is a program that provides free tax return preparation and electronic filing for low- and middle-income members of the community.

Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Training begins in December, using training materials and software provided by the IRS.

All volunteers must attend training classes and pass the IRS Tests before assisting taxpayers during the tax season.

The TAX-AIDE program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation and the IRS. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree. Similarly, recipients of TAX-AIDE services do not need to be an AARP member or retiree.

The program is a good way for people who enjoy preparing income tax returns, enjoy helping people and have basic computer skills, program organizers say.

Gail Anundson, a TAX-AIDE volunteer in Sequim for several years, says she continues to volunteer year after year.

“(I do it) because the taxpayers are so appreciative of the TAX-AIDE program,” Anundson says.

“The taxpayers and the other volunteers are a joy to work with.”
