Things I like (Two): Movies of 2012

Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd in one of my favorite films from 2012. "Dredd 3D" just came out on DVD/Blu-Ray and is definitely worth a watch for any fan of the action/ Sci-fi genre.

Favorites (not all came out in 2012):
• Dredd: A great, simple, Sci-Fi action movie with a kick-butt protagonist. Karl Urban was great in “Star Trek” and continues to be great as the grisly Judge Dredd. This is based on a British comic book and written by Alex Garland who wrote “28 Days Later,” one of the best horror movies ever. Do yourself a big fave and avoid the Stallone/Rob Schneider adaptation. This is definitely not a remake.
• The Secret World of Arrietty: This is animation done at its best. America may try to copy its style but can’t always seem to capture Hayao Miyazaki’s (writer) heart in his stories.
• Beginners (2010): An interesting plot with fascinating characters. Plus Ewan McGregor always has a charm about him that you can't help but admire.
• The Adventures of Tintin: Secrets of the Unicorn: Indiana Jones was reborn in animated form through this great graphic novel retelling. Check out the books; you won’t regret it.

• 21 Jump Street/Ted (TIE): Best comedies of the year for different reasons but both bring back some great nostalgia in different ways. All of the 1980 “Flash Gordon” references in Ted were hysterical.

Most talked about in our house:
• The Art of the Steal (2009): We loved this documentary and kept talking about the ramifications of the decisions made for weeks. Worth renting from Netflix.

Most eager to watch in 2013:
The Master, Django Unchained, Robot & Frank, The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, Safety Not Guaranteed, Moonrise Kingdom, Kick-Ass 2, and The Man of Steel.

Not that anyone asked, but here is a chronological list of the movies I watched in 2012. Since 2005, I’ve tracked every movie I’ve seen in the theater, on TV and on rental. I write the movie on a spreadsheet and write a brief review for future reference. This year I referenced it more than ever because I watched a lot of movies again for the second time — or more. I’m including a few favorites and some movies I hope to watch in 2013. So, happy viewing this year! Remember, tastes vary but feel free to share a favorite.
