Pirates, Trojans play to tie

Just three games into

NWAACC conference play, the Peninsula Pirates have seen a little of everything, from shutting teams out to getting shut down.

On Saturday, it was time for a tie.

Teagan Cambier and Steve Williams each had second-half goals as the Pirates (1-1-1 in conference, 1-3-1 overall) came back from a 1-0 deficit to earn a tie Sept. 13 against Everett.

Abou Khan opened the scoring at 28 minutes, but Cambier took a Ryan Muyskens pass and tied it five minutes into the second period. Hugo Vasquez found Williams for a score and a 2-1 Peninsula lead nine minutes later, but Clint Simon tied the game at the 68-minute mark for the game's final score.

The tie helped Peninsula rebound from a 2-0 loss at Highline Sept. 11. Peninsula had a shot on goal within four minutes but couldn't put it away, and both teams couldn't find the net in the first half.

The Thunderbirds, undefeated in conference play at 4-0-1, scored at 60 and 70 minutes and out-shot the Pirates 9-6.

"We had (a) great run of play against Highline but just couldn't finish," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said. "We had a mental lapse for 10 minutes which ended up costing us.

Tritons no match for Pirate power

Defending NWAACC West Division champion Peninsula College scored three goals in the second half, crushing rock Edmonds 4-0 in the Pirates' home opener Sept. 9.

After going scoreless in a pair of nonconference losses, the Pirates got their first goal of 2008 when Ernest Boham outmaneuvered Triton keeper Scott Lane and dished it to Sam Greely for a 1-0 Peninsula halftime lead.

The Pirates broke it open early in the second half when Greely returned the favor, assisting Boham for a score a few moments after the kickoff. Three minutes later, Boham crossed the ball in front of the Edmonds goal for a Steve Williams goal and 3-0 lead.

Hugo Vasquez finished the scoring at 53 minutes, off a Williams assist.

Jase Hall (two saves) recorded the shutout for Peninsula, with help from defenders Sean Gaskins, Buck Kunz, Jason Simonis and Martin Gray.

Peninsula out-shot Edmonds 9-4.
