Beta Nu group awards grants, scholarships to teachers

The Beta Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international women's educational sorority and philanthropic society, gives grants to current and future educators in the Sequim area.

Chapter members make money available for future teachers who are third-year college students majoring in education.

The deadline for these grants each year is July 1.

More information about these grants is available at Clallam County school district offices or by contacting Carol Verstegen at 683-4821 or by writing to 134 Sunset Place, Sequim.

The chapter also grants awards to teachers each year to help fund educational projects such as teacher workshops, post-graduate education and national board certification efforts. Applications for these grants are accepted between Nov. 15-June 1.

The Beta Nu group also awarded scholarships to students pursuing a teaching career who have graduated from Clallam County high schools or completed a two-year program at Peninsula College.

The 2009 grant winners are Lauren Andison, Whitney Bigger, Pam Fleming, Craig Frick, Julie Leaf, Karina Omdal, Gwen Rudzinski, Justine Textor and Ann Walrath.

Grants are worth $1,500 each.

The grants are awarded in memory of Helen Gariepy, a longtime Port Angeles educator and member of the Beta Nu Chapter who left a bequest to the chapter for such scholarships.

Over the past 10 years, Beta Nu members have awarded 164 grants to Clallam County teachers, totaling more than $105,000.
