A drum roll, please, for Belly Kicks

Belly Kicks, a new maternity clothing store, is set to open Thursday, Oct. 1.

Store owners Ashley and Michael Kurtze have had the idea brewing since their first son, Preston, now 21/2, was born.

Before and after pregnancy, Ashley could find comfortable, new maternity clothes only online or an hour away in the Bremerton area.

"Ordering online is

sketchy because all sizes are different depending on the brand," she said.

Cost was another factor.

"Our main goal is to stay affordable because (maternity clothes) are ridiculously priced."

She said maternity clothes are easy to find online, but cute and fashionable items are more expensive.

The couple wants Belly Kicks to focus on feel-good fashion, too.

"A lot of the clothes are to make you feel comfortable with your body," she said.

A woman's changing body can make it hard to determine sizes, so the Kurtzes encourage people to come in and try on items.

"Even if we don't have something they want, at the very least they can come in and try things on and know their size," she said.

Business specifics

Ashley said finding new maternity clothes in Sequim and Port Angeles is tough. Resale shops offer used maternity clothes, but new retail stores offer few options.

A friend of the Kurtzes who works at JCPenney frequently receives requests for maternity clothes but must turn them away.

"People would be surprised to know how many young families there are in

Sequim," she said. Belly Kicks offers these new products, and more:

Dressy pants, khakis, low- and high-cut jeans, nursing shirts, hats, bras, diaper bags, pacifier clips, teething dolls and organic products such as shampoo and sprays. Gift certificates are available.

Their clothes can be worn after pregnancy because they'll stay fashionable, she said.

Most tops have ties so they can grow with the mother and baby.

The Kurtzes are feeling out the business and are open to suggestions about products.

"If there's something

you'd like to see, let me know," Ashley said.

"As the months go by, we'll stock more and more," Mike said.

"Things are changing daily, so come back and check it out."

The store has two changing rooms, a seating area and a playroom for children.

"Hopefully, this gives younger families a place to shop locally and see what sizes you are," Ashley said.

The Kurtzes own the Roof Guru roofing business along with Belly Kicks.

Belly Kicks will hold its grand opening on Nov. 7.

Starting in December, the Kurtzes will offer 10 percent of their profits every other month to a charity. They encourage nonprofits to drop off their business cards.
