County shrinks Sequim's UGA

The Clallam County commissioners agreed to remove 75 of 101 acres south of West Hendrickson Road and east of North Priest Road from the city's urban growth area but keep areas bordering utility lines inside the growth boundary.

The area slated for removal includes the Palo Verde subdivision.

Once the decision is final, Sequim cannot extend its water and sewer services to residences in that 75-acre area unless they rejoin the urban growth area.

Urban growth areas for cities are established by the county based upon recommendations from city officials. They mark the geographic boundary of a city's future annexation and utility service.

County Commissioner Steve Tharinger, D-Dungeness said, "It's difficult for folks who run into water and sewer problems who aren't in the UGA, but we've received a number of petitions from people saying they don't want to be in it.

"I don't know if they have information on what that means but this is a method to resolve the issue. They can petition later to get back in," he said.

Joe Borden, whose property backs up against the old growth boundary, said, "I'm not happy with it because I wanted to stay in, so I'll just wait and see what I can do.

"Hopefully nothing happens but who knows? I'm not thrilled not being able to hook up to the city water.

"I understand that majority rules, but what does that do for those not in the majority? It would take more than just me petitioning to get back in," he said.
