Sequim gets split at Kent tourney

Sequim not only survived a weekend tourney with just nine players on its roster, but thrived.

The class 2A Wolves dropped a 6-4 decision to 4A Kentwood - a state tourney qualifier in 2009 - and followed that up with a 10-0 thrashing of Auburn-Riverside's junior varsity squad at the Kentwood Classic in Kent on March 13.

"If we played (Kentwood) again, I think we'd beat them," Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson said. "It was a good starter game for us."

Lea Hopson drove two runs and hit a triple while Chelsea Winfield added a two-run double to fuel the SHS offense.

Injuries and illnesses have plagued Sequim's early season, forcing the Wolves to enter the Classic with just nine available players.

That problem didn't help the Wolves any heading into the week, with games at Chimacum on March 15 and at Mount Rainier on March 16 (game results were unavailable at press time).

Sequim hosts Forks March 19. The Wolves are at Port Angeles on March 22 before playing at home again, a March 24 date with Bremerton.
