Middle School goes historic

If history repeats itself, Sequim students should perform well at the state History Day competition on May 1.

On March 22, Sequim will send 49 students to the regional competition for a chance at state, with results yet to be announced. See this week for an update on how the students fared.

Each year, all Sequim Middle School students and a small group of high schoolers make either a documentary, exhibit and research paper, or a performance on a historical subject of significance for the local competition, with teachers and staff judging for regional placement. Students compete in categories for grades six-eight and nine-12. 

This year’s theme, “Innovation,” led to projects as diverse as Leonardo Da Vinci, the Grand Coulee Dam, local heroes, women’s suffrage and more. Students first displayed their projects at parent night on March 16.

Students who go on to the state History Day and place first or second earn a spot at the national History Day competition in June.
